The South Manchester Railroad was built in 1869, and at 2.25 miles was the shortest freight and passenger railroad in the US. It was built by the Cheney brothers who had a silk mill in South Manchester and sought a connection to the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad mainline in the other end of Manchester. Passenger service ceased in 1933 and freight ended in the 1980s with abandonment following.
